On the flight a violent storm rocks the plane and a strange man in the seat next to him introduces himself as Mr. Wednesday. Mr. Wednesday claims to know more about Shadow than should be possible and warns that a far bigger storm is coming, a warning that changes Shadow's situation from that moment onward.

Reader guide

What to Know Before Reading American Gods

The description focuses on a single man's disrupted desire for a quiet life after his wife's death and on an unsettling encounter aboard a stormy flight. Much of the setup centers on the relationship between Shadow and the mysterious Mr. Wednesday and on a looming, unspecified threat framed as a "far bigger storm." The supernatural or speculative element appears tied to Mr. Wednesday's impossible knowledge of Shadow. This may appeal more to readers interested in character-centered conflict mixed with eerie, potentially supernatural interruptions to ordinary life.
