Wife leaves with ex-husband Ray tracks purchases to Mexico Eccentric bus owner aids pursuit Car held together by coat-hangers Humorous misadventures unfold

Ray Midge is waiting for his credit card bill when his wife, Norma, runs off with her ex-husband, taking Ray's cards, shotgun, and car. From the receipts they leave behind, Ray tracks their purchases and sets off after them. An irritatingly tenacious bail bondsman follows as well, both tracing the couple's spending all the way to Mexico.

In Mexico Ray encounters Dr Reo Symes, a seemingly down-on-his-luck and eccentric owner of a beaten-up, broken-down bus who needs a ride to Belize. Ray and Dr Symes continue the pursuit in a car held together by coat-hangers and excesses of oil; the farther they drive, the wilder their journey becomes. Determined and resourceful, they press on to find Norma and reclaim what was taken.

What to Know Before Reading The Dog of the South

A deadpan comedic novel that follows Ray Midge, a pedantic and oddly focused young man from Arkansas, on a bizarre road trip through Texas, Mexico, and Central America. Ray’s journey begins out of necessity rather than a desire for adventure: his wife, Norma, has run off with her ex-husband, Guy Dupree, and the fleeing couple has taken Ray's cherished Ford Torino and credit cards. Determined to recover his property and his wife, Ray sets off on their trail with nothing but a determination to see justice done and an idiosyncratic, overly analytical worldview.

The heart of the narrative lies in the surreal characters Ray encounters along the highway. Chief among them is Dr. Reuel Reedy, a disgraced and eccentric medical school dropout traveling in an old school bus christened "The Dog of the South." Dr. Reedy is an endless source of strange philosophies, dubious business schemes, and unsolicited advice, quickly becoming Ray's reluctant companion in his quest. As the journey progresses deeper into the sweltering landscapes of Central America, the plot takes on a picaresque quality, driven entirely by Ray's deadpan interactions with local bureaucrats, expat visionaries, and fellow drifters.
