Ex-Green Beret leads eco-sabotage Characters unite against industrial threats Conflict unfolds in Southwestern deserts Dark comedy amid escalating chaos Misadventures on the Colorado River

George Hayduke, an ex‑Green Beret and Vietnam veteran, returns to the Southwestern desert to find his beloved canyons and rivers threatened by industrial development. On a whitewater rafting trip down the Colorado River he joins three companions: feminist saboteur and Bronx exile Bonnie Abzug, wilderness guide and outcast Mormon Seldom Seen Smith, and libertarian billboard torcher Doc Sarvis, M.D.

Together they set out as eco‑raiders, targeting strip miners, clear‑cutters, and the highway, dam, and bridge builders altering the landscape. Their escalating acts of sabotage and the resulting misadventures produce a mixture of chaos, conflict, and dark comedy as the four clash with corporate forces and with one another while fighting to protect the natural places they love. Their actions sweep through remote canyons and river corridors as they escalate their campaign against development.

What to Know Before Reading The Monkey Wrench Gang

George Hayduke, an ex‑Green Beret and Vietnam veteran, returns to the Southwestern desert and joins Bonnie Abzug, Seldom Seen Smith, and Doc Sarvis to sabotage industrial development that threatens canyons and rivers. The book follows their campaign of eco‑sabotage against strip miners, clear‑cutters, and the highway, dam, and bridge builders reshaping the landscape. Conflicts arise from their differing backgrounds—Bonnie’s militancy, Seldom Seen’s solitude, and Doc’s libertarian streak—creating tense loyalties and comic misadventures while raising questions about civil disobedience, environmental protection, and the costs of direct action.
