Detroit's used-car lots are the backdrop Stickley and Ryan's partnership faces tension Schemes involve dangerous firearms Rules are bent amidst criminal chaos Moral compromises escalate throughout

Ernest Stickley Jr., the smallest of small-time criminals, thinks his luck has changed when Detroit used-car salesman Frank Ryan catches him trying to boost a ride from Ryan's lot. Rather than turn him in, Frank pulls Stickley into a string of surefire get-rich-quick schemes—all of them involving guns—and promises that if Stickley follows "Ryan's Rules" he will share the wealth.

As the plans move forward across Detroit and its used-car yards, the partnership strains under practical risks and mismatched competence: sometimes rules need to be bent, maybe even broken, and the operation's supposed "brains" knows less than nothing. The clash between Frank's confident schemes, Stickley's small-time ambitions, and the violent methods they depend on produces unpredictable danger, moral compromise, and mounting pressure on both men.

What to Know Before Reading Swag

Ernest Stickley Jr. is caught trying to steal a car from Detroit used-car salesman Frank Ryan and is pulled into Ryan's gun-centered get-rich-quick schemes. Stickley is told to follow "Ryan's Rules" to share the wealth, but the partnership falters as the rules are stretched and often ignored. The central conflict hinges on practical incompetence—the operation's supposed "brains" knows less than nothing—paired with the growing risk and moral erosion that comes from relying on violence and opportunism.
