Home-health aide moves to Hope's End Lenora Hope confined to a wheelchair 1929 family murders remain unsolved Lenora begins to share her story Suspicious past of Lenora's nurse

At seventeen, Lenora Hope was at the center of the Hope family murders on the Maine coast in 1929. The killings became a schoolyard chant and a public assumption that Lenora was responsible, though police never proved it. She never spoke publicly about that night and has not left Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

In 1983, home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End after Lenora’s previous nurse fled. Now in her seventies and confined to a wheelchair after strokes, Lenora taps sentences on an old typewriter and offers to tell Kit everything, insisting, "It wasn’t me." As Kit helps Lenora write, suspicious details about the predecessor and Lenora’s account begin to surface.

In 1983, home-health aide Kit McDeere moves into Hope's End to care for Lenora Hope, who insists she did not commit the 1929 family murders.

What to Know Before Reading The Only One Left

The description focuses on a confined elder accused of a decades-old massacre and the young caregiver who enters her isolated life. Much of the setup centers on mystery and mistrust as Lenora, rendered mute by strokes, taps sentences on a typewriter and offers a contested version of events. The atmosphere is Gothic and claustrophobic, with tension arising from unanswered questions about the past and the sudden departure of the previous nurse. This may appeal to readers drawn to tense domestic mysteries that hinge on unreliable testimony and confined settings.
